It is Still Raining

Last fall our area experienced what was called a 100 year flood.  It rained for days and days.  My kids looked out the windows often and reported incredulously, “It. Is. STILL. Raining!” It was really unbelievable how much water was dumped on parts of our state in a very short period of time, causing a great deal of damage.  Rain can be inconvenient, but rain that doesn’t quit gets dangerous as it quickly turns into flash floods and streams and rivers swell outside their banks.

Lately I’ve been noticing another kind of rain.  A flood, if you will.  The weather outside is hot and steamy here in the south with 100% humidity our only moisture, but life…it keeps bringing one storm after another.  And it isn’t just me.  I could easily name situations from a dozen families who are close to me, folks from our church and my extended family. It seems that the Enemy of our Soul is on a rampage.  He is seriously mad at the body of Christ and trying to defeat, discourage, and make us ineffective.  He has come in like a flood trying to destroy our peace and shake our foundations, bent on leaving as much damage in his wake as he possible can.

Maybe you’ve been hit by some storms too.  Financial troubles.  Unexpected car repairs. Broken AC since it is 3 million degrees outside.  Appliances that won’t work.  Health issues and illness. Crisis within your family.  Disagreements in your marriage.  Emotional distress.  Betrayal.  Parenting issues.  Problems your kids are facing.  Lost jobs.  Unexpected relocation.  Addiction.  Floods may look different for each of us, but when the enemy is involved they can have a crippling effect on God’s people. I’ve seen all these things happening to good people I love in the last week, but I don’t believe anything grieves the heart of God more than when the enemy starts whispering to God’s very own people…and they listen to the lies and become Satan’s tool to hurt the body of Christ.

Oh, my heart was broken this week to see believers turn on other believers…to see them slander, gripe at and disparage each other…and especially to do it in public forums while the unbelieving world watched.  How smug and delighted Satan must be, taking pleasure in how deep his filthy claws are dug into the church while the comments on Facebook fly over hurt feelings, traditions and preferred Bible translations.  Satan laughs at our folly.

But I have news for the old serpent.  He doesn’t get the last laugh.  And he can go right back to the pit he came from, because this is what my Bible says, “The Lord rules over the floodwaters. The Lord reigns as king forever. The Lord gives his people strength. The Lord blesses them with peace.” – Psalm 29:10-11

Satan may come in like a flood, but my God rules over the flood waters.  Satan may have a little power now, but my God reigns as king forever.  Satan may come after us when we are weak, but my God gives strength to His people.  Satan may want to rob us of our joy and peace, but my God grants peace as a blessing and gift to those He loves.  It is His promise to us.  Peace is our birthright.  Joy is our privilege.  We are the prized possession of the King of Kings and He will withhold no good thing from us regardless of what lies Satan may whisper in our ears.

When Satan wants to come after us like a flood then he needs to be reminded that we belong to a God that parts seas and walks on water.  Our God created the world by the words of his mouth and holds us in the palm of His mighty hand.  God is all-powerful, all-knowing and everywhere.  Satan is a created being who has to ask God for PERMISSION to roam the earth!  God is my Abba Daddy and Satan is a bully on the playground and my Daddy is way bigger than him. Can. I. Get. A. Witness?

Satan has no power over us because James 4:7 says, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” In other words…when I stand up to Satan, in the name of Jesus, weilding the power that God has given to me, Satan has to run away like a rodent back to his hole.

Friends, the rain comes.  Walk under the umbrella of God’s great grace.  When the rain turns into a flood, trust God to part the waters or give you the strength to walk on top of them in the power of His great name.  Victory is ours!  “But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory…because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world.” – 1 John 4:4

Walk in victory today in the mighty name of Jesus.  He is worthy of our praises!
